What is a Growth Mindset?
A growth mindset is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication, effort, and learning. It fosters a love for learning, resilience, and viewing failure as a growth opportunity. In fact, studies have shown that mistakes lead to more learning in the long run than doing something right the first time. Essentially, the brain makes stronger connections after making a mistake in order to avoid making that mistake again in the future.
The opposite of a growth mindset is a fixed mindset, which is the belief that intelligence does not change. However, this mindset becomes something of a self-fulfilling prophecy since people with this mindset tend to avoid challenges, fear failure, and perceive effort as useless. Put simply, people with a fixed mindset believe that success stems only from innate talent.
At The Math Solution, we encourage students toward a growth mindset, validating all responses to encourage exploration and learning. Mistakes are celebrated as learning experiences. Effort is encouraged, even if it doesn’t result in a complete answer. And dedication is recognized as much as, or more than, current abilities.

Our Philosophy
Every student is capable of learning. Period.
However, some students may face hurdles when trying to learn Algebra that must be addressed. A few examples from my own experience working with students are:
Some students lack familiarity with basic math facts. This can make solving problems more difficult (especially when there is a strict time limit, such as on quizzes or tests).
Some students lack confidence in their ability. When students have internalized a belief that “I’m just not good at math” or “math is too hard”, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Some students focus on memorization rather than understanding. Many students focus on memorization rather than understanding. For some students, this can be helpful. However, many students get tripped up when the material they memorized looks very different from the problem they are confronted with on a quiz or test. Students who learn to recognize patterns and different ways to solve are more likely to excel in the long term.
Through repetition and review, these issues, and others, can be addressed. Students are given the opportunity to return to familiar concepts in new ways. This reinforces skills, deepens understanding, and helps students form lasting connections with the material. In this way, students build both confidence and long-term retention — giving them the courage and insight to approach unfamiliar problems.
