The Math Solution utilizes a combination of online live video sessions and dual cameras for students. Students use a standard webcam for themselves, allowing the teacher to recognize visual signs of confusion or understanding, as well as a second camera as a document camera showing their written work, allowing the teacher to see their mathematical process. In this way, The Math Solution mimics a real-life classroom, but with the individualized attention a small-group or individual environment allows.
My Philosophy
Every student is capable of learning. Period.
However, some students may face hurdles when trying to learn Algebra that must be addressed. A few examples from my own experience working with students are:
Some students lack familiarity with basic math facts. This can make solving problems more difficult (especially when there is a strict time limit, such as on quizzes or tests).
Some students lack confidence in their ability. When students have internalized a belief that “I’m just not good at math” or “math is too hard”, it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Some students focus on memorization rather than understanding. Many students focus on memorization rather than understanding. For some students, this can be helpful. However, many students get tripped up when the material they memorized looks very different from the problem they are confronted with on a quiz or test. Students who learn to recognize patterns and different ways to solve are more likely to excel in the long term.
Through repetition and review, these issues, and others, can be addressed. Students are given the opportunity to return to familiar concepts in new ways. This reinforces skills, deepens understanding, and helps students form lasting connections with the material. In this way, students build both confidence and long-term retention — giving them the courage and insight to approach unfamiliar problems.
